More Hipsters Using Food Stamps...and Eating Well While They're at it

I really don't know what to think about this new trend.

Very interesting article. I think it is more of a statement of just how the country is doing economically than anything else. My family qualifies for food stamps but we do not collect any benefits because even though our income is low I find that we can get by, by shopping wisely, eating meat free meals, and growing our own food. One thing people may not realize is that you can buy seeds to start your own garden with if you are on food stamps.

Thank you for pointing out the article. I love your blog. I am not Catholic but I love your lent time menus. They save us lots of money.

Thank you Cassandra! I will try to share more meatless meals. BTW, I did not know that about buying seeds.

My opinion? Clearly the "hipsters" in question are using the food stamps to supplement their food budget. Otherwise they could never buy rabbit, organic honey and what-have-you on that money. Of course, they're also feeding just themselves on it, no one else. That matters as well!
Beyond that, it bugs me. I feel like they're taking advantage. Not that I don't think that people who are on food stamps shouldn't eat well--that is not the case. But the ordinary working folks aren't eating as grandly as the people in this article.

Barb, when I think about stories of elderly people not having enough money and resorting to eating cat food, it saddens me. I am not saying who is deserving or not but the elderly should be able to eat better than that.
